Effective Treatment of Liver Disease

Signs and Symptoms

Your liver is the largest organ inside your body and one of the most important. Your body cannot function without your liver. It converts food into stored energy and fights infection by removing alcohol and other toxins from your blood. It also makes bile, which helps with digestion.

There are many types of liver disease. Some, like hepatitis C, are caused by viruses. Others are caused by long-term chronic alcohol use. Cirrhosis occurs when your liver forms scar tissue and slowly deteriorates. Obesity, bile duct disorders and some inherited gastrointestinal diseases can also cause cirrhosis. Symptoms include yellowing of the skin (jaundice), nosebleeds, easy bruising, extra-sensitivity to medicines and kidney failure.

Early Treatment

Cancer can also affect the liver. Some five percent of people with cirrhosis will develop liver cancer, so treatment is imperative. Without early treatment, the liver malfunctions and can not perform its primary functions: fighting infections, storing energy, making protein and cleaning blood. With end-stage cirrhosis, however, the liver can no longer effectively replace its damaged cells.
