"The Prep Is Worse Than The Procedure"
Having done over 100,000 colonoscopies at the Springfield Ambulatory Surgery Center over the years we have heard that more than once. You know it, we know it, everyone knows it. Personally, I have tried all of them, for one reason or another.
Since we at Hillmont are so experienced and skilled at doing colonoscopy, THE main factor in a quality examination is the quality of the preparation. Even though it is so loathed, it is vitally important.
Believe it or not, we have made great improvements to the preparation over the years. Studies have confirmed that the preps we use now involve drinking less volume, taste better, are safer and work better than what we used ten years ago. Hillmont GI has been involved in several of those studies over the years. Those who are more experienced remember the original – drinking more than a gallon of rotten-egg flavored Jersey shore ocean water in two hours. Nausea, cramping, then explosion. What joy! Since then many variations have been instituted. Tweaks have included flavors, laxative pills, turning the solution into pill or powders, adding or subtracting this or that, less volume, as well as changing the timing of the doses.
There are a several options available that we now use. They are the best out there. State of the art. Confirmed by studies. Since the preparations are truly lifesaving, and still so reviled, there is ongoing research for even better ones.
